A stochastic biomass blending problem in decentralized supply chains

Blending biomass materials of different physical or chemical properties provides an opportunity to adjust the quality feedstock meet specifications conversion platform. We propose a model which identifies right mix optimize performance thermochemical process at minimum cost. This is chance-constraint programming (CCP) takes into account stochastic nature quality. The proposed CCP ensures that requirements, are impacted by and biomass, met most time. consider two problem settings, centralized decentralized supply chain. mixed-integer linear program blending in setting bilevel setting. use sample average approximation (SAA) method approximate chance constraints, solution algorithms solve this approximation. develop case study for South Carolina using data provided Billion Ton Study. Based on our results, blends identified consist mainly pine softwood residues. cost chain 2 6% lower, shows assumption decision making leads underestimating costs
